Emergence onto Land

As plants spread and oxygen levels rose, the Earth’s environment shifted prompting some ocean creatures to make their first steps onto land.

In Emergence onto Land, visitors follow this journey, encountering amphibians and catching glimpses of prehistoric species hidden within the wall caves.

Chapter 2: At the Surface

The ocean has long inspired human exploration, revealing unknown islands, rare plants, and fascinating animals. The Jewel of Muscat embodies this enduring spirit.

Singapore’s Coast

Visitors arrive at Singapore’s Coast to explore its diverse terrains and ecosystems. With careful observation, they may spot mudskippers on the flats, crabs among the rocks, and vibrant corals beneath the water, all brought to life through 3D projection mapping.

Chapter 3: Sunlight

The Coral Garden showcases vibrant shallow-water ecosystems and the fragile balance humans have disrupted. This fragility continues in the Kelp Forest, where the loss of sea otters caused the kelp ecosystem to collapse, threatening countless marine species.

Poisonous vs Venomous

Ever wondered which species are poisonous and which are venomous? In this zone, visitors of all ages can test their knowledge in the interactive game Poisonous vs Venomous, turning curiosity into discovery.

Garbage Patches

These currents drive fish migration, regulate temperatures, and carry human debris, forming massive Garbage Patches.
Visitors can trace the journey of a single water bottle to see the impact of our actions on the ocean.

Artquarium

At the Artquarium, visitors create their own imaginary fish and learn how different body shapes and features help species survive in their habitats.

Chapter 5: Midnight

As visitors move deeper into the Oceanarium, the environment changes drastically, guiding them along the bioluminescent floor toward the whalefall zone.

Trenches

Visitors finally reach the trenches, where strange and fascinating creatures emerge from the darkness as a towering video wall conveys the vast, eerie emptiness of the deep.

Chapter 6: A New Horizon

As the journey draws to a close, visitors are reminded of the ocean’s fragile yet powerful nature and the role they play in shaping its future.

This short film explores the remarkable evolution of tool technology that shaped human history. Early humans transformed simple stones into essential tools like knives, axes, and spearheads.

Next to the exhibit, viewers can view the very stone tools featured in the film, offering a tangible connection to the remarkable craftsmanship displayed on screen.

Brahmi Script

The Brahmi script is the ancient foundation for countless regional scripts used across India today.

A projection wall near the recreated entrance of the Barabar Caves showcases the evolution of the Brahmi script into modern Indian scripts.

Brahmi Writing

Visitors are invited to type their names, which are then transformed into the ancient script, revealing the shared ancestry between Brahmi and various modern languages.

To capture this unique experience, visitors can take home a printed comparison of their name in Brahmi and its modern script.

The Might of the Nandas

An animated film sequence unfolds across a full-height wall, immersing visitors in a dramatic battle scene.

Set against a rain of spears and arrows overhead, the sequence brings to life the raw power of the legendary Nanda warriors, evoking a sense of tension and awe.

As the scene reaches its climax, warriors riding towering war elephants charge forward, symbolizing the epic battles of 4th century BCE India.

These paintings offer a glimpse into the lives of early inhabitants, depicting scenes of daily life, hunting rituals, and symbolic representations.

To bring these ancient images to life, the exhibit transforms rock art into subtle animated figures, enhancing the visitors’ experience.

Key periods of Indian history are explored in Gallery B. The artistic and cultural peak of the Gupta era is showcased through terracotta art and intricately detailed coins.

The rise of Buddhist-learning centres is exemplified through a recreated monk’s cell from Nalanda University. To complement this, a life-size recreation of a priest performing a ritual is projected onto the facade of the Mundeshwari temple.

Figures and themes adorning both sides of coins issued by early Gupta rulers are brought to life through a series of animated projections displayed on the gallery walls.

The Gupta Coins

The die-struck process, a centuries-old technique, was utilised for coin minting in India. The Gupta dynasty’s power and prosperity are reflected in the significance of these coins.

Visitors engage in an interactive 3D game where they select animals and occupations to create personalised digital coins, replicating the ancient minting process.

Within the same exhibit, they will be introduced to the imperial Gupta rulers and the significance of the coins issued by them, gaining insights into their symbolic meanings and historical importance.

Nalanda Monk Cell

Visitors step into a reconstructed monk’s cell to experience life at Nalanda University.

Once a thriving centre of learning, the university’s vibrant past is brought to life through audio and visual displays that depict the activities that once filled these spaces.

Nalanda University

Nalanda University, a renowned centre of learning from the 5th to 12th centuries, is explored through its architectural remains.

Drone footage offers a comprehensive perspective of the university’s layout, while interactive hotspots in the exhibit provide detailed information on its various structures and functions.

Visitors are also introduced to other significant Buddhist universities that flourished in Bihar during this period.

The Spread of Pala

The artistic legacy of the Pala dynasty extended far beyond its borders. The multitouch table exhibit explores how Pala art and culture spread from Bihar across Asia, influencing diverse regions.

Displayed among the Pala statues, this interactive exhibit allows visitors to engage with the art’s influence while viewing the sculptures that reflect the dynasty’s rich heritage.

Viewers can explore the intricate details of Buddhist and Hindu iconography, and delve into the world of Vajrayana Buddhism, which thrived under Pala patronage.

Mundeshwari Temple

A mapped projection brings a priest performing a ritual to life on the temple’s façade.

This façade is a recreation of the iconic Mundeshwari Temple. One of the oldest and most protected monuments since 1915, it stands as a testament to India’s rich architectural heritage.

Five Years to Build a Kingdom

Despite a reign spanning only five years, Sher Shah Suri secured his place as one of India’s most capable rulers.

Displayed against a map of ancient India, visitors can explore key locations significant to Sher Shah’s rise to power, contributions, and achievements.

Gallery G: Bihari Diaspora

Gallery G offers a comprehensive exploration of the Bihari diaspora, beginning with the harrowing experiences of the Girmitiyas (indentured labourers) during colonial times.

Clouds on the Ashokan Pillar

Holographic storm clouds churned across a recreated Ashokan Pillar, foreshadowing the journeys ahead for the Bihari diaspora.

These churning clouds mirrored the challenges and uncertainties faced by those leaving their homeland.

History of the Bihari Migration

The 19th and 20th centuries in Bihar were marked by a large-scale exodus. Men, women, and children left their homes for unknown foreign lands under the colonial indenture systems.

Visitors embark on a visual journey through this period, encountering archival black and white photos, footages, and digitised documents.

Many people migrated from Bihar during the 19th and 20th centuries due to British rule.

A large-scale wall projection brings these stories to life, showcasing the journeys of individuals who left their homes for uncertain futures abroad.

Music of the Diaspora

Bihari folk music culture stretches from the roots of rural Bihar into distant regions such as the Caribbean, and North America.

Musical instruments are suspended in a display above the exhibits, symbolizing the far-reaching influence of Bihari music across the world.

Bidesiya Nautanki & Songs

The Bihari migration is expressed through the traditional folk genre known as Bidesiya.

With its deeply emotional style, Bidesiya focuses on themes of separation, longing, and migration, often depicting the pain of leaving one’s homeland for better opportunities.

Bihari Diaspora Today

This concluding exhibit provides an in-depth exploration of the Bihari diaspora, tracing its evolution from historical migrations to its present-day global influence.

Through a multitouch table and a projection wall, visitors can interact with both archival and contemporary data, uncovering the diverse experiences and contributions of Biharis around the world.

When visitors share their stories, the projection wall dynamically displays their contributions, creating a collective narrative that evolves in real-time.

Intepretation

The gallery narrative follows a series of “themes”: topics that allow visitors to gradually understand the principals and development of our economy. As this approach cuts across the various departmental roles of MAS, a special task force and approval process was set-up to facilitate the curatorial process.

Design

Strong, geometrical lines convey a sense of movement and rigor. The gallery interplays form, lighting and media to create compelling narrative spaces. Self-illuminated graphics in combination with environmental lighting creates a layered, yet uniform and pleasant viewing experience.

The Future of Finance

In this 360 mirror-space, visitors look forward to the future, and see how fintech promotes an inclusive society.

The acrylic colour strips on the wall flows seamlessly into the 3 kiosks. This installation symbolises how user data is captured and used by Financial Institutions.

Each kiosk houses interactive comic strip that explains how AI and Data Analytics improves services for each of the Financial Institutions.

How much privacy is one willing to give up to receive better services? How should financial institutions use personal data responsibility?

The dialogue between Financial Institutions and their Users continues as 2 opposing kiosks. On the F.I. kiosk we feature the F.E.A.T. principal governing ethical use of user data. On the user kiosk, we crowdsource opinions pertaining to data privacy.

At the centre of this space is the “Block-chain” table, where multiple users can create block-chain objects and understand the use and benefits of block-chain in the financial industry.

The “Money Lab” is where visitors can try out different payment options in Singapore, and trace the money path through various institutions.

Be a Change-Maker

Everyone can make a difference in the financial world.

Secure one’s financial future by understanding the compound-effect of Interests; and averting risks through diversifying investment in a production-line game.

Learn about the types of people that makes the industry tick, and finding a match base on one’s personal traits.

Visitors can also capture a souvenir in this virtual photo-booth before they leave by becoming a front-page personality.

Reflections

Reflections is a multi-purpose seminar room used regularly for stakeholder engagement. It is also open to the public for group debrief and viewing of documentary videos.

Café

The brightly lit, new MAS Café exudes warmth, with the wall now opens up to the view of the exterior greeneries.

Content refresh

Popular exhibits retained get a content refresh with new looks. A large interactive video wall hosts the masterplan map, where visitors can click and navigate around the live, online masterplan map.

Mapping Singapore

A new “Map Room” now occupies the previous model-makers’ workshop on level 2.

Maps are not just navigational aids and historical records; they are also used by urban planners in many ways. Here, visitors see Singapore’s development through the eyes of interesting maps.

In this series of 4 motion graphics video, important early maps come to live, and visitors learn about the significance of each one.
The 1971 concept plan shaped the way Singapore is today. But many other possible plans were studied then. What if we had chosen a different topology? How would Singapore look like today?

Alternative Realities

Alternative Realities is a highly popular and child-friendly realtime 3D city creation program. From a rich palette of 3D assets and land reclamation & removal tools, the user can turn Marina Bay into an industrial park, a residential estate, or even a large resort. In fact, He can re-shape Marina Bay anyway he wishes, limited only by his imagination.

Mapping the Future

This motion graphics video and interactive simulation demonstrates how maps can be used together with infographics to visualise urban big data, so planners can better understand usage behaviours and urban patterns.

How Our City Works

The centrepiece of the revamped gallery, this immersive and interactive space is visually stunning yet engaging. It is created with an interactive LED floor and touch sensitive wall where contents react to visitors’ every movement. Visitors witness how the city runs like a clockwork underground, where urban sub-systems of water, waste, energy, greenery, and transport synergise with each other, and our limited resources are managed efficiently.

After the show, visitors can interact with the projection wall to find out how they can change their lifestyle to help reduce the loads on our infrastructure.

Integrated Infrastructure

The infrastructure world is complex. Through a real depicting of infrastructure facilities around the island, visitors can observe this complex network, and understand how each layer is connected to the other.

Infrastructure sub-systems

The projection mapped graphics wall is quirky and informative. Touching the wall turns graphics alive. Through animated illustrations, visitors learn about the resource loops, and key features of each sub-system.

Shaping Singapore

Our preferred life-styles shape Singapore. Visitors select bubbles from the “Vortex” to reflect lifestyle preferences. After the group poll is done, a corresponding future residential district will be shown on the projection wall.

Personal Journeys

“SingCity” began with a city full of cars, and “SingCitizens” were tired of the long jams and polluted air caused by it.

This story-based role-play game lets visitors make transport choices based on their needs.Through the choices they make, players make “Singcity” a more efficient and pleasant place to live in.

Streetmix

Design a street in Orchard or in Ang Mo Kio. All visitors need to do is drag and drop elements onto the street. By mixing the correct number of lanes for buses, cars, and bicycles, the necessary transport throughput and carbon footprint can be met. There is more, you can even turn the street into a buzzling neirghbourhood!

Urban Design Elements

Here, visitors learn about elements of urban design by mixing-and-matching visual street elements. How would Orchard Road look like if there were no trees and a street full of banners? What if our skyline is a mix of different architecture styles and heights?

Flower Dome: Entrance

Colourful palettes of blooming flowers dances across the “petals” at the entrance to the Flower Dome.

Flower Dome: Octascope

While looking down into the octascope, one might be forgiven if they think that there is an infinite virtual flower dome down below. This Octascope is an optical illusion created using 8 reflective mirrors and an animated LED screen.

Flower Dome: Interactive Wall

5 large interactive walls paint a scenic view of a forest. What if you can chop them down with your bare hands? Or replace them with urban build-ups? This interactive installation provokes and makes one think about how humans and their actions can adversely impact other living creatures sharing our earth.

Flower Dome: Pepper’s Ghost

5 Pepper’s Ghost units lines the exit to the Flower Dome. Each tells a story of how plants adapt to its environment. Images reflecting off the special glass are projected onto carefully crafted models and lighting effects, creating stories of wildfire, the four seasons, drought, and other spectacular scenes.

Cloud Forest Dome: Earth Check

This is the center for Earth Data Collection. An immersive environment full of animated infographics telling earth’s ever-evolving story. How are we doing today compared to how we were in the past?

Cloud Forest Dome: Plus 5 Degrees

What would happen if the earth was 5 degrees hotter? This 2-storey high immersive projection is a dramatic and theatrical space that tells the tragic story of our earth in the near future. As the clock ticks, and the temperature rises and things change. The earth has already embarked on this global warming journey.

Cloud Forest Dome: Projection Map

4 large projections, 2 on the white acrylic model of the Gardens and 2 on the wall, explain the natural cycles of the Gardens. The Gardens carbon neutral way of life contends that there is still hope yet for humankind if we make a change now.

Cloud Forest Dome: Soundscapes

Multi-channel soundscapes provide an aural backdrop to the domes. Imagine feeling like you’re inside a bat cave at the “Crystal Mountains” and then finding yourself at the “Cloud Forest” as you exit the “mountain”. Visitors can also listen to rare sounds underground, like slimy worms crawling and termites head-butting.

Theme Gardens: The Malay Gardens

3 documentaries – “Batik Making”, “Wood Carving”, and “Pandan Weaving” are sreened on a video wall in an open pavilion. The filming took us to the Kampungs in Malaysia, where we looked at how traditional Malay art epitomizes how people and plants can live harmoniously.

Periscope

Located in “The Secret Lives of Trees”, the periscope is an interactive live CCTV treetop view, with video footages depicting how different animals live above the canopy of trees.

Wind-up Sound Generators

These carefully manicured animal-shaped plants can make sounds, if only you will wind them up.

Dragonfly Lake: Augmented Reality Scopes

Looking like giant gyroscopes, these AR scopes bring to life stories of the lake. Short animated stories shows why the Dragonfly Lake is important to cycles of nature at the Gardens, and how it is important to the ecology of the Gardens.

QR Mobile Contents

The QR-tagged animated web contents extend the Dragonfly lake stories beyond the physical boundaries of the Gardens via the visitor’s personal mobiles or specially customized designated tablets for guided group visitors.

Playing on being a “Paradox City”: that Singapore possesses many paradoxes. However, our proposition is that it is not a zero-sum game that you don’t have to give up one for the other. You can be highly developed at the same time, green. The pavilion was designed as a spatial narrative in 4 zones.

Paradox-ity: The Immersive Introduction

On entering our pavilion through a container, visitors “open” into a vast space with a 3D-cube sculptured wall on one side.

Through projecting and mapping intricately onto each 3D cube, visitors are entertained and enthralled by our opening show that encapsulates and mirrors the entire storyline of the pavilion.

The show begins with water dripping and filling up an imaginary tank, eventually overflowing and turning into real water flowing down the wall. In a dreamscape-like manner, our “Paradox-ity” story unfolds.

Beautiful Trash

Passing through a walkway with a wall sculpture made entirely of used materials, visitors enter into an underwater scene with fishes swimming overhead. Little periscopes contain video images that show wildlife spotted at Pulau Semakau, Singapore’s largest landfill.

Live, Work, Play and so on

Small City, Big Dreams is on show here. 5 “dream-boxes” are interactive AV installations that transport visitors to Singapore. Literally and virtually.

Work Box

In the WORK box, visitors “stick” their heads into a cube with video screens on all 4 sides and discover a video presentation of a city that runs like clock-work, in a toy-like manner.

Live Box

In the LIVE box, visitors enter into a simulated living room with a window made up of 4 HD videos. It displays Singapore’s high-rise nestled amidst lush greenery. The window scene changes from day to night, and to even a tropical rainstorm.

Play Box

In the PLAY box, visitors maneuver a Korean and a Singaporean kite amongst many others at the Marina Barrage rooftop garden.

Conserve Box

In the CONSERVE box, visitors pedal a real bicycle to navigate through our heritage district. Watching the rider trying to avoid a pedestrian is just as fun!

Culture Box

In the CULTURE box, visitors can enjoy a virtual virtuoso performance by our young violinist on a Pepper’s Ghost stage.

Every Drop Counts

In the finale, visitors walk into a tropical rainstorm and collect the water droplets using Korean Hanji paper. As the water diffuses over the paper, it carries with it pre-dyed ink, making interesting colour patterns on the paper. In an almost spiritual and symbolic way, we want visitors to know that every drop counts.

Gallery One

Visitors to the gallery are welcomed by scenes of Singapore today. But this welcome gallery also poses a question: How does a small, resource-scarce city-state, like Singapore, become such a livable and vibrant place?

Gallery One: Singapore, Vibrant City

“Singapore, Vibrant City” is a 270 degrees projection show that spans more than 12m. Filmed with 5 EOS5Ds on a bespoke rig, the documentary pulses through 24/7 of Singapore with an affectionate and truthful lens.

The video introduces its audience to Singapore’s vibrant lifestyle and explores the meaning of “home”.

Gallery One: Touchstones

The 4 interactive exhibits presents the challenges and dilemma faced by planners of Singapore: small land size, changing and sometimes conflicting aspirations, the need to develop and conserve, needs of a city-state, and economical support. This is juxtaposed against the 270 degrees backdrop of “Singapore, Vibrant City”.

Created using “Processing” programming language, the “Touchstones” interface is fluid, and organic.

Gallery Two

Having rewound the clock, visitors find out what this small country did, in such a short time, to get to where it is today.

Gallery Two: Mural

Imperially lined along the mezzanine corridor of Gallery Two is the “Mural” that highlights major planning milestones of development. AV presentation is seamlessly embedded into the mural.

Each object in the mural is carefully chosen to represent a talking point. It is understood that “Mural” is the most used, and favoured exhibit for group visits, because it lends itself as a useful yet interesting platform for guides to tell the story of Singapore.

Gallery Two: CAM Surveyor

As Gallery Two oversees the huge Central Area Map (CAM) model, the CAM Surveyor provides an experiential link for visitors on the mezzanine level to the large model below. Being on the “history” gallery, “CAM Surveyor” is an Augmented scope that tells interesting stories about the central area, through discovery of hotspots on the CAM.

Concept Plan / Master Plan

Ending the “history” section is today’s plan. At the end of Gallery 2 is the Concept Plan / Master Plan area, where the process of planning is explained. The current Master Plan can be accessed live via a web kiosk.

Gallery Three

The planning process is presented, not by means of methodology flow, but through the faces of people that contributed to the plan.

Gallery Three: Portraits of Planning

Monologues of different kinds of residents intersperse with planners, create an interesting, multifaceted forum on planning.

Gallery Four

The best way to understand the difficulty in space planning is to do it yourself.

Gallery Four: SingCity

“SingCity” is an 8-player role-play game. Players are asked to fulfill national goals and are given different sets of things to build. From infrastructure, to amenities, to residential and commercial buildings, players are scored based on how well they meet the objectives. They soon run out of land, as is with any city planner, but with good planning, they might still achieve a very high score.

At the end of the round, players get a copy of their city in the mail.

Gallery Four: Innovative Solutions

In addition to good planning, there are other innovative ways to overcome land constrains.

2 interactive posters and 2 interactive tables provide the platform for exploring such innovations, like going skywards, or going underground; intensified development; and other creative use of space.

Gallery Five

The concept of Home is further explored here. What makes Singapore a sustainable and livable city that feels like home? The current plans in placed are further explained.

Gallery Five: Interactive Map

An interactive multi-layered projection allows visitors to “mix-and-match” different planning areas. For example, one can overlay transportation with housing with green spaces, or compare housing with industrial and commercial hubs.

Gallery Five: Live/Work/Play interactive

Interactive touch screens explain how planning enhances the quality of life in Singapore, making it a comfortable home, and an efficient and business friendly workplace.

Gallery Five: A Brush with History

Residing within the conservation zone, “A Brush with History” is an IR based multi-touch wall that allows users to wipe and reveal portions of an old photo of a conservation area. A recent photo is taken in the exact same way as the old photo, so visitors can playfully compare and mix the 2 eras.

Gallery Six

From making Singapore feel like Home to making Singapore special, Urban Design comes under the spotlight in this gallery.

Gallery Six: UD in Bite Size

A large scale interactive allows visitors to re-make China Square in 3D, and appreciate the “massing” context of the space, where there is high-rise at the background and conservation in front. Visitors can also visualize how Orchard Road might look like, if certain elements of Urban Design are missing.

A large interactive screen allows visitors to fly-through the Marina-Bay area and appreciate different Urban Design elements at work.

Distinctive Districts

Enclosed in a glass house is a panoramic video introducing 3 interesting and distinctive districts: Singapore River, Orchard Road, and Bras Basah. Through interviews and interesting camera works, the distinctly lifestyles of the 3 areas are portrayed.

CAM Show

A projection mapped show on the Central Area Model (CAM) comes on at intervals. For 3 minutes, the large-scale projection show becomes the highlight of the gallery. A total of 4 projectors are needed to cover the entire projection area.

Photo-booth

A virtual blue-screen studio sits in a corner of the glass house. Visitors are transported to interesting landmarks around Singapore, and with it, they can send e-postcards home.

ION Art

Multimedia people was engaged to produce the media content for the LED skin and facade, water jet and lightshows as well as ambient media walls located around underground perimeters. We also curated the digital flipdot sculpture “Waterfall” by renown UK artist Troika.

To complete the picture, Multimedia People continued to provide full advisory on design development, playback architecture, events, exhibition programming, PR and other operation matters after the mall has opened.

The most famous of the ambient media walls is themed “Water”. With animated fishes swimming above and alongside visitors, one feels as if they are under water as they move through the space.

For the opening, we produced media content for the exterior LED skin and facade titled “Spring”.

We also produced more festive pieces like this one, shown during Christmas.

2 exhibitions showcasing work behind the creation of ION Art was curated and produced.

FusionWorld boasts many feats. First, it is a visitor centre that has a 4096 pixel long digital video that spans 180 degree in the launch theatre. The show was produced on film and eventually edited on 4K digital format.

In FusionWorld, visitors also find themselves interacting with video characters through natural dialog, as well as hand gestures, or RIFD objects in different zones of HOME, WORK, HEALTHCARE and TRANSPORT.

In TRANSPORT, visitors ride on bikes and journey through a 4D-stereoscopic futuristic landscape.

On-location Reporter

This is a blue-screen interactive whereby the visitor acts as an on-location reporter and reads from a teleprompter.

Digital Dance Studio

This is another blue-screen interactive that gets visitors on their feet.

A virtual dance instructor guides the visitors through 4 traditional dances.

Cutting-edge Technology

Interactives like “Life’s labyrinth” and “Smart Station” engages visitors young and old.

“Life’s labyrinth” is a tilt-table labyrinth game with different maze designs. Visitors navigate through the maze to avoid the pitfalls in life, by tilting and activating a flight accelerometer.

“Smart Station” is a 3D, real-time interactive robot that converse with the visitors through play station style control precise lip-sync, through a proprietary software developed in the US. The virtual host plays games interactively with the visitors through pre-designed quizzes and videos.

Multi-player Games

Styled like wacky TV game shows, and hosted by 2 of the funniest theatre actors, multi-player games: “Enterprise Quest” and “Harmony Circle” are 2 of the most popular exhibits at SDC. It is not difficult to see why.
